Michael Setzen, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P.

Dr. Michael Setzen is a 1974 graduate of the University of Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed an internship in general surgery and medicine at the Johannesburg General Hospital in 1975. Following this, he emigrated to the United States and did an internship in general surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1977 and 1978. Following this he commenced his specialty training in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri at the Washington University Medical Center under the chairmanship of Dr. Joseph Ogura. He completed his residency in July of 1982. Following this he commenced practice with North Shore Otolaryngology in Manhasset, New York and has done so since September of 1982. He is the author of a book, written chapters in many books, and more than forty-five articles on the subject of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery.
Dr. Setzen is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at New York University Medical Center and New York Medical College. He is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Cornell University Medical College.
Dr. Setzen is Chairman of the Laser Committee, past Co-Chief of Head and Neck Surgery, and Section Chief of Rhinology at North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset.
Dr. Setzen is extremely involved in the organizational aspect of medicine and particularly otolaryngology on a local, state and national level. He was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, 2000-2001 and has been an executive member of the Board of Governors for nine years. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.
He is a past president of the Long Island Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, the Nassau Surgical Society, and the New York Head and Neck Society. Dr. Setzen received the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Honor award in September of 1997.

Dr. Setzen was part of a Surgical Design Team of 6 leading ENT Surgeons from around the world. The team partnered with industry - namely Gyrus-ENT and Ideo to design the new Diego Powered Dissector [Microdebrider] to revolutionize the surgical treatment of sinusitis during Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. The design team included Fred Kuhn, MD; James Stankiewicz, MD; William Bolger, MD; Roy Casiano, MD, Michael Sillers, MD and Michael Setzen, MD. [September 2002]. This invention won a Gold Award in August 2003 from IDSA (Industrial Design Society of America) and Business Week.

Dr. Setzen has been responsible for teaching medical students and residents during his 23 years of practice and has been called upon to lecture throughout the country and the world on all aspects of ear, nose and throat surgery, in particular, nasal and sinus disorders, rhinoplasty and swallowing disorders.
